Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Starburst Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE / HAVANA, N.Y.," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a finely slip-trailed design of a spotted flower blossom surrounded by six rays. Excellent color and highly unusual design, particularly for this maker. Thin 3 1/4" crack from rim on front and a 2" rim chip on reverse. Otherwise excellent condition.
