Extremely Rare Stoneware Harvest Jug with Applied Decoration, Marked "MANUFACTURED / BY / R.C. REMMEY & SON / PHILAD'A, PA," circa 1895, beehive form with wide and narrow pouring spouts, the handle modeled in the form of a sawed limb, its terminals bearing three branches bearing cut-and-applied-clay maple leaves. Incised details throughout handle and applied decoration. Jug covered in a Bristol slip glaze, the spouts, handle, and branches highlighted in amber-colored glaze, and the leaves decorated with cobalt. Top of jug marked with a late-period Remmey / Philadelphia maker's mark in navy blue. This harvest jug is the first example of its kind produced at the Remmeys' pottery that we have seen. As its form and rustic decoration clearly link it to the Ohio potting style, this work was likely made at the Remmeys' shop by an Ohio-trained potter or inspired by a piece that a Remmey pottery worker saw at a trade fair. Among the most elaborately-decorated vessels known from the Remmey family's final years of cobalt-decorated stoneware production in America. Smaller spout cleanly broken and reglued. Old filled firing crack in underside. Minor wear to handle. H 10 1/2" ; L (across handle) 9 3/4".
