Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Hawk Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed scene depicting a spread-winged hawk above a field with pine tree, fence, and shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exhibited: "Birds in American Art," Heritage Plantation of Sandwich, April-Oct 1978, Catalogue #45. Includes exhibition sticker on interior. A 5" crack from rim on right side of crock's front. Otherwise excellent condition with a small in-the-firing iron ping to interior of rim. H 9 1/8".
