Rare Moravian Redware Squirrel Bottle with Whieldon-Type Glaze, Salem, NC origin, circa 1801-1829, molded in the form of a standing squirrel feeding on a nut atop an oval base, the lead-glazed surface colorfully-decorated with alternating copper and manganese sponging over a slip-coated ground, a treatment often associated with the work of Staffordshire potter, Thomas Whieldon (1719-1795). Significant (possibly complete) restoration to base including feet. Spout chips. Chips to one ear. Various edge wear and other light surface wear. A faint 5 1/4" hairline from spout. H 8 1/8".
