Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Stenciled Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC, late 19th or early 20th century, tapered churn with flared rim and applied lug handle and vertical strap handle, stencil-decorated in dark-brown slip with horseshoe and daisy motifs over a light-brown-glazed ground. Incised "3" under one handle. Vertical strap handle restored. Some additional restoration to rim. Small chips and wear to inner rim for lid. A 7 1/2" crack on underside, continuing 5 1/2" up reverse. A 2" flake to underside at edge. A shallow 3/4" base chip and wear to bottom edge. Exfoliation to underside. H 15".
