Exceptional Tin-Glazed Redware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "J. BELL," John Bell, Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, ovoid jar with flared base with tooled rim, the surface dipped in tin slip, lavishly-decorated with brushed tulip motifs surrounded by a sponged border, and covered in a clear lead glaze. Lead-and-manganese glaze to interior. The refined glaze treatment and exuberant decoration of this jar rank among the very best known in Bell's oeuvre, albeit one with considerable condition issues. Broken into pieces and reassembled with areas of painted touch-up along the edges of the reassembled pieces. H 6".
