Rare Anna Pottery Salt-Glazed Stoneware Frog Mug, Inscribed "Chicago Swell / 1876," Stamped "ANNA, ILL," Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, 1876, cylindrical form with flared rim, stepped foot, and ribbed handle, the interior with hand-modeled figure of a frog decorated with original green-and-black cold paint. Incised with the cobalt-highlighted inscription, "Chicago Swell / 1876," along with the rare impressed and cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "ANNA, ILL." Surface covered in a salt glazed over traces of Albany slip. This mug is one of only two salt-glazed examples of the form that we have handled and the first bearing an Anna stamp, arguably the best of its type offered by our auction. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Mid-Atlantic U.S. A 5/8" flake to underside at edge. A horizontal hairline through handle. Dimensions: H 3" x Diam. 3 5/8".
