Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Chicken Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with rounded and tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flaring, semi-rounded rim, decorated with slip-trailed design of a chicken with large comb and spotted body, standing on a stylized ground. The depiction of the chicken is unusual in that it is not in the typical "pecking" stance with corn, instead presenting the bird with a raised head. A 3/4" chip to exterior of rim on right side of jar, including a faint 1" line descending from it. Small chips to interior of rim. Very minor wear to inner rim for lid. A shallow 7/8" chip to right handle. Significant staining. A small in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. H 10 7/8".
