Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "KEESEE & PARR, / RICHMOND, / VA.," circa 1860, ovoid pitcher with footed base and short, flaring collar, including three piercings on the reverse rim area, formed prior to the firing to allow for a metal lid. Brush-decorated around the midsection with three large horizontal tulip motifs. Swag decoration flanking the spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed on front with the maker's mark of the partnership of potter, David Parr, Jr. and merchant, Thomas W. Keesee. Shoulder impressed with two-gallon capacity mark. One of a few signed Richmond stoneware pitchers known, this work features strong decoration and a desirable two-gallon capacity. A restored top-to-bottom crack on right side of pitcher's front, continuing onto underside. Otherwise excellent condition. H 13 1/2".
