Scarce Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Pittsburgh, PA Advertising, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled advertising, "OMMERT & HOFFIELD. / CHOICE / FAMILY GROCERIES. / PITTS.," above James Hamilton maker's stenciling. Freehand stripe to shoulder, midsection, and base. Stenciled "5" with flourishes at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 2 3/4" rim chip on front. A 3 1/2" Y-shaped surface line to reverse. Minor staining. Two tiny nicks to shoulder moldings. A shallow 1" chip on underside at edge. H 15 7/8".
