Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to David Greenland Thompson, Morgantown, WV, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, angled rim molding, and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated at the shoulder with a looping vine motif between freehand stripes. Body decorated with a sinuous vine capped by small flower blossoms. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Thompson family four-gallon capacity mark on reverse. A long, thin horizontal line at base extending from front to right side. A chip to interior of rim. H 14 1/2".
