Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a fanned, slip-trailed floral motif surrounded by a scalloped, spotted border and a second border of scalloping, Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Outstanding decoration, desirable size, and strong condition. The first example of Norton stoneware decorated in this manner that we have seen. A chip to interior of spout, a minor chip to exterior of spout, and light staining to surface. H 11".
