Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER. N.Y.," circa 1885, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head and heavily-detailed body perched on the leaf of a plant. Slip-trailed "5." above. Cobalt accent to maker's mark. Provenance: Ex-Bruce and Vicki Waasdorp, Clarence, NY. Some fry to cobalt. A rim chip on reverse. A few minor in-the-firing iron pings to surface. H 13 1/2".
