Extremely Rare Molded Stoneware Coffeepot, Stamped "D. & J. HENDERSON / Jersey City", circa 1829-1833, finely-molded form with griffin's-head spout, the body with relief bearded satyr's head, scrollwork, and acanthus leaf motifs. Grapevine motif to shoulder. Handle in the form of a satyr with reed pipe and staff. Underside impressed with a circular "D. & J. HENDERSON / Jersey City" maker's mark, in which the impression is reversed. Impressed beside maker's mark with an asterisk. Includes original domed lid with grapevine motif. Clear-glazed surface over buff-colored clay. Exceptional form. Pieces produced at this short-lived manufactory represent some of the most high-styled stoneware produced in 19th century America. A coffeepot of identical form and maker's mark is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY. Pot with a 2 3/8" wide U-shaped line at rim, including a 2 1/4" vertical line extending through it. Pot in otherwise excellent condition. Lid with two large reglued pieces. Additionally, a 2 1/8" loss to flange on underside of lid. H (including lid) 11 1/2".
