Outstanding Copper-Glazed Redware Squirrel Bottle, Salem, NC origin, 1801-1829, molded in the form of a standing squirrel feeding on a nut atop an oval base, the surface covered in a mottled-green lead-and-copper glaze. Among the finest examples of this iconic Southern form known, this work features exceptional lime-green coloration to the glaze, including attractive lighter crawling throughout. This striking color was likely achieved by applying the lead-and-copper glaze over a white slip coating. Strong condition for a form typically found with losses. Provenance: Ex-The Stradlings, New York, NY. Professional restoration to most of one ear. Small areas of unrestored wear. H 7 3/4".
