Fine Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and large, arching tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with slip-trailed iron-slip drape motifs against a celadon-colored alkaline glaze. Front additionally inscribed in iron slip with a script "C" for Chandler. Looping iron slip line decoration below each handle. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, which descended in the family of the consignor. A small drilled hole in underside. One handle with two surface lines and a minuscule nick. Other handle with a minor nick to one end. H 15 3/4".
