Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stamped "F.A. GALE / GALES-VILLE, N.Y.," circa 1860-1865, cylindrical jar with applied lug handles and flared, semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a spread-winged eagle, embellished with heavy feather detail. The stylized rendering of the bird and thick, prolific application of the cobalt creates a wonderful folk art image. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Large areas of restoration to surface of jar, including areas on front. This restoration includes a small amount of cobalt bordering the bird's beak and areas of cobalt on the right wing. A 5" Y-shaped hairline to underside, forming a second 5" hairline on reverse. A thin, approximately 4 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse, partially painted over. Wear to inner rim for lid. H 13 1/2".
