Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt House Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed scene of a two-section house with eight windows, a circular dormer, and a door, atop a hill with two split-rail fences and a pine tree. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Significant all-over restoration to surface, including some paint to handles. The decoration is largely untouched, with some painted touch-up to lower fence and ground. An unrestored chip to one handle. A small in-the-firing chip to underside. H 11 1/8".
