Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Wreath Decoration, Stamped "E NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1881-1885, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a wreath accented with spots, surrounding a looping line. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. An unusually elaborate design for this period in Norton stoneware production. A 13" crack from rim on reverse and a 12 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. A 3 1/2" loss to rim on front. A 2 3/4" in-the-firing loss to base. Other small in-the-firing base chips. Minor water glass staining to front. H 13 1/4".
