Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & Co. / GREENSBORO. / PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a stylized stenciled sunburst surrounded by James Hamilton maker's stenciling. Boldfaced stenciled "2" below, flanked by thick dashes. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Provenance: Estate of author and historian, Nancy Shedd, Petersburg, PA; purchased by Shedd from Burkholder's Antiques, Hollidaysburg, PA. X-shaped crack on underside joining a long horizontal crack at base. A 2 1/2" crack from rim on side of jar. Minor wear to interior of rim. Some blurriness to stenciling. An in-the-firing dry spot to base on front. H 11 3/8".
