Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling accented with small stenciled tulips, diamonds, scrollwork, and flourishes. Freehand straight and wavy stripes above. Base with stenciled "5" flanked by stenciled flourishes, above a freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Very nice condition. A minor chip to shoulder molding. Minor wear to surface/cobalt on front. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing surface separation on underside, continuing 2" up front, not visible on interior. Minor staining. H 15 1/2".
