Rare and Fine Quart-Sized Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, probably Shenandoah Valley of Virginia origin, third quarter 19th century, ovoid pitcher with heavily-tooled, flaring collar, decorated with a brushed sweeping stem bearing tulips, graduated leaves, and dashed accents. Spout and front of collar decorated with horizontal stripes and spots. Swag decoration to sides of collar. Handle decorated with heavy striping and highlights to the terminals. Scalloped cobalt brushwork below. Exceptional size and outstanding decoration. A sealed 3 1/4" crack to right of spout, a spout chip, and a minor chip to side of handle. H 7 1/4".
