One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Bowl, Stamped "S. BELL & SON. / STRASBURG, " VA origin, circa 1890, tapered bow with squared rim and small lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with three upswept swag motifs, applied over slip-coated clay. The decoration is atypical of the Bells' work, but commonly found on pieces made at the pottery of merchant, William H. Crisman, indicating one of Crisman's workers was also involved at the Bells' shop. Manganese wash to interior. Chips throughout rim. Wear to interior of rim. Network of hairlines to underside, extending partway up wall of bowl, including one extending 4 3/4" up side below one handle. A chip and wear to one handle. H 5 1/2" ; Diam. 10".
