Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1870, keg-form cooler with tooled and cobalt-highlighted banding and circular bunghole, decorated with a bold cobalt design of a crested bird perched within a wreath. Cobalt spot decoration to bunghole. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent decoration, form, and color. The two-gallon capacity of this work is somewhat smaller than most Norton examples of the form. Includes antique wooden spigot. Two cracks from rim on front, measuring 5 1/2" and 3". A few surface scratches to front. Two cracks from rim on reverse, measuring 5 1/4" and 2 3/4". A 3 1/2" cross-shaped hairline on underside, extending 3/4" up base on side of cooler. A 3" 1/4" inverted Y-shaped surface line at midsection on reverse, not visible on interior. Other small surface lines. A minor chip to interior of rim. H 11 1/4".
