Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Leaf Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON, PA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an exceptionally large design of a leaf emanating from a stem with looping vines, one culminating in a smaller leaf. Design measures roughly 11" long around the curve of the jar's front. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A large Y-shaped crack on underside connecting a long horizontal crack at base. Two small chips to one handle. Short, faint surface lines to reverse. Water glass staining to surface. H 13 1/2".
