Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Flowering Urn Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1860, large-sized, cylindrical jug with squared spout, lavishly-decorated with gadrooned urn with open handles and pedestal base, brimming with flowers, leaves, vines, and dotted trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This ambitiously-decorated work features exceptional size to both the vessel and its design; it is the first six-gallon Norton jug that we have offered and its flowering urn motif measures roughly 13 1/2" tall and 11 1/2" wide. Excellent condition with a 1 1/2" in-the-firing fissure in lower handle terminal, which is partially glazed over, and a minor chip to interior of spout. H 19 3/4".
