Rare and Fine One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Bird-and-Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large bird, profusely-detailed with swags, dashes, and spots, perched on a flowering vine with scrolled leaves. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Variants of this extravagant design can be found on pieces marked "MARTIN CRAFTS / BOSTON" and "WM E. WARNER / WEST TROY," suggesting an as-yet-unidentified itinerant decorator was responsible for all of them. Literature: A related design is featured on the cover of Leder and Cesana, The Birds of Bennington. A large salt drip to front. A few in-the-firing iron pings to reverse and one to underside. Small spout chips. A minor base chip. An in-the-firing contact mark below tail. H 13".
