Unusual Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, VA origin, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, slightly-flared rim, and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed swag motif. Further decorated under one handle with a slip-trailed "2" and looping flourish reminiscent of designs from the alkaline-glazed tradition of Edgefield, SC. Several rim chips. Wear to interior of rim. An in-the-firing stone ping near base. A minor chip to underside at edge. H 11 1/4".
