Rare and Fine Stoneware Bank with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, probably PA origin, third quarter 19th century, ovoid form with footed base, tooled shoulder, and elaborate stepped finial. Decorated around the body with a series of brushed swags and hanging flowers. Horizontal coin slots with spotted circumferential decoration running below. Heavy cobalt highlights to finial. Reverse of bank with two original pierced holes. This bank's cobalt brushwork suggests an origin in the state of Pennsylvania, with its darker clay and unglazed reddish underside indicating it was probably made in the Western half of the state. Restoration to top of finial. Otherwise excellent condition with some spalling to cobalt slip on finial. H 6 1/2".
