Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1870, ovoid pitcher with footed base and tooled rim, brush-decorated with a sweeping stem with graduated leaves, culminating in a tulip blossom. Swag decoration to spout. Graduated stripe decoration to sides of collar. Brushed tulip motif to base of handle and highlight to upper handle terminal. Impressed on reverse with "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA." mark above a half-gallon capacity mark. Desirable maker, form, and size. Exhibited: What a Crock! Johnstown Potteries of the 19th Century, The Johnstown Area Heritage Association, 2006; included in exhibit catalog. Provenance: Estate of author and historian, Nancy Shedd, Petersburg, PA. Damage to end of spout. Rim chips. A 3 1/2" Y-shaped crack on side of pitcher, forming a tight spider crack on underside. H 8 1/2".
