Extremely Rare Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, probably Midwestern origin, circa 1875, beehive-form with stepped finial and original opening at base, the front decorated with a well-detailed, slip-trailed design of a rooster flanked by elaborate flowering plant motifs. The vast majority of cobalt-decorated chicken waterers are decorated with regional floral or foliate designs. The depiction of a rooster on this work, identifying its use as a poultry fountain, is highly unusual, ranking it among the best examples of the form that we have ever offered. Some fry to cobalt. A Y-shaped crack to underside, part of which extends 2 1/2" up base of waterer on one side. A 3" narrow flake to underside and a 1/2" narrow flake to underside. An additional faint 1 1/4" surface line at base on front. H 12 1/2".
