Three-Gallon Pedestal-Based Stoneware Cooler with Impressed Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "SOMERSET, / POTTERS WORKS," L. & B.G. Chace, Somerset, MA, mid 19th century, ovoid form with applied lug handles, flared rim, square bunghole, and attached pedestal base; decorated with two impressed designs of facing birds perched on incised leaves. Birds feature impressed and incised details to their wings as well as coggled treatments to their necks and tails. Bunghole includes faux screw head embellishments. Cobalt accents throughout. Reverse with large brushed and slip-trailed flowering urn motif. Brushed cobalt stripes to handles and highlights to handle terminals, maker's mark and capacity mark. A 6 3/4" x 2 1/2" restored section to rim on reverse. Crazing to midsection of pedestal base. A 2 1/4" surface crack to foot of pedestal base. H 14 3/4".
