Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Dog-in-Floral Decoration, probably Somerset Potters' Works, Somerset, MA, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a dog with pointed ears and curled tail, framed within a brushed cobalt flower. Desirable size, color, and subject matter. This is the first example of stoneware that we have seen featuring this particular stencil. Excellent condition with extremely minor handle wear and a small in-the-firing chip to interior of rim.
