Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a flying eagle with arrows, surrounded by Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling. Freehand stripes and vining above. Base with stenciled "4" flanked by flourishes, including a freehand stripe below. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Unusual incised wavy line on underside. Chips to one handle, one of which is glazed over. A salt drip near base on side of jar. Chipping to interior of rim. A thin 11 1/4" Y-shaped crack to right side of jar's front. A small in-the-firing contact mark near base on reverse. H 15 1/2".
