Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed bird perched on connected tree branches. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Significant cracks in underside. A 5 1/2" Y-shaped hairline to front. A salt drip to base on reverse. A tiny nick to left handle. A minor chip to interior of rim. Minor nicks and wear, some painted, to inner rim for lid. Interior painted brown. Large restoration to right side and reverse. H 12 3/4".
