Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design crossed birds perched on connected tree branches. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 10 1/2" diagonal section of poorly-colored restoration descending from left side of crock's front at rim to the left edge of the decoration, including some touch-up to the branch and the bird's tail. Restoration to front terminal of right handle. An unglazed in-the-firing contact mark near base on reverse. Wear to edges of handles. A 2" restored section to edge of rim and small restored rim chip on right side of crock. Minor chipping to rim. H 12 3/8".
