Fine Early-Period Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders / Cleveland / Ga," circa 1965-1970, ovoid jug with hand-modeled facial features including ball-shaped kaolin eyes with dark-slip pupils, nose formed without nostrils, large ears, and an open mouth with broken china plate teeth. Surface covered in a mottled dark-olive to reddish-brown alkaline glaze. Underside incised with the signature, "Lanier Meaders / Cleveland / Ga." An excellent example of Meaders' early work depicted with various "early-period" features. The inclusion of Meaders' hometown of Cleveland, Georgia in the signature is rarely seen. Provenance: Collection of Dr. John A. Burrison, Atlanta, GA; on loan to the Atlanta History Center, Atlanta, GA since 1981. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 8 1/2".
