Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "J.C.," Stamped "SWAN & STATES / STONINGTON, CT," circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with the large, ornately-brushed initials, "J C." Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. This jar, likely a presentation piece, is the first example of Stonington, Connecticut stoneware that we have seen decorated with cobalt lettering of any kind. Two in-the-firing surface cracks to interior, not visible on exterior. Shallow chipping around base. Two in-the-firing contact marks (chips) to one handle. A minor, in-the-firing fissure to underside, not visible on interior. H 13 1/2".
