Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "F.B. NORTON & CO. / WORCESTER, MASS.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a stylized branch. This design is related, but somewhat rarer than, this manufactory's typical parrot design, which features a crest, pronounced beak, and paddle-shaped tail. Light cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. A 3 1/4" hairline from rim on reverse. Shallow chipping to interior of rim. A 1 3/4" in-the-firing iron ping at base on side of jar. H 11 1/2".
