Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "S. HART & SON / FULTON," NY State origin, circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed birds with crests, perched on a branch. Brushed details to birds' tails and ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An 8" crack from rim to right of decoration. A small chip to front of rim. A 7/8" rim chip on reverse. Two small chips to interior of rim. A chip and minor nick to left handle. An in-the-firing gritty appearance to cobalt. Minor surface wear to front. Some staining. H 11 3/4".
