Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA. NY," circa 1865, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a branch with scrolled leaves. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A large, partially glazed-over spout chip and two other spout chips. A 1 5/8" in-the-firing surface chip to midsection. In-the-firing, glazed-over vertical lines to base. A 3 1/4" horizontal in-the-firing line below handle. Some in-the-firing residue to right side of jug. A horizontal hairline to underside of handle. Some wear to cobalt on bird's wing. Some staining. H 13 1/2".
