Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Tree and House Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an artistically-rendered, slip-trailed design of a large tree flanked by a fence and a house in the woods. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark. One of a small number of Norton pieces known with this design. An in-the-firing contact mark below tree. A lesser in-the-firing contact mark below house. A small piece of glazed-over, adhered clay above house. A very faint vertical line to house. Some short, faint vertical lines to base. An inverted U-shaped line to spout. A few minor spout chips. Some light water glass staining to surface. H 15".
