Scarce Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "TRAPP & / CHANDLER," John Trapp and Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1848-1850, ovoid jar with flared rim and applied lug handles, the surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze and decorated on the front and reverse with thickly slip-trailed drape and looping line motifs in kaolin slip. Additional kaolin slip looping line decoration underneath each handle. Impressed at the shoulder with scarce "TRAPP & / CHANDLER" maker's mark, used during the brief partnership of Reverend John Trapp and Thomas Chandler. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. A 4" crack on underside, continuing 11" up side of jar below one handle. A shallow 1 1/8" in-the-firing chip to inner rim. Some small spots of wear to slip. H 15 1/2".
