Fine Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "Lm," Dave at Lewis Miles Stoney Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1857, rotund jar with raised collar, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, attractively-decorated with a runny gray alkaline glaze over a dark, reddish-brown ground. Incised "Lm" for "Lewis Miles" at the shoulder, between three incised punctates and an incised horseshoe and slash mark. Jar exhibits a leftward lean. This work features one of the most striking glaze treatments on any Dave jar that we have offered, closely-related to that seen on a signed jar with 1857 date, bearing the incised couplet, "I made this jar for cash, though it is called lucre trash." Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. Excellent condition. A small rim chip. A short, thin crack on underside extending a few inches onto base. An in-the-making, 1 3/4" sliver-shaped chip at base, possibly created when the jar was removed from the wheel. An in-the-firing surface ping near base, measuring 3/4". H 13 1/2".
