Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration and 1841 Date, Stamped "E.S. FOX / ATHENS," NY State origin, 1841, ovoid churn with applied lug handles and slightly-flared collar, decorated with a large brushed foliate motif depicting two large leaves emanating from a central stem. Further decorated below with the brushed date "1841," within a semi-circular leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Fry to cobalt. Rim chips. Small chips to inner rim for lid. A 3 1/4" crack from rim on reverse. Some water glass staining to surface. Two in-the-firing pings below left handle. Two shallow base chips. H 16".
