One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a long-tailed bird with tucked head, perched on a stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Restoration to much of spout as well as some minor chipping to spout. A small chip to underside, probably in-the-making. Minor wear to base of handle. Two very short and minor in-the-firing lines to base area. A small in-the-firing iron ping to right of decoration, which includes a small cross-shaped line. H 11 1/4".
