Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pomegranate Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with a brushed design of a vertical branch bearing four heavily-shaded pomegranates and five well-detailed leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Fruit designs other than grapes or cherries were rarely produced by this prolific Central Pennsylvania pottery. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing contact mark to front and a long in-the-firing horizontal surface fissure at base. H 15 3/4".
