One-Gallon Stoneware Jar, Stamped "SMITH & DAY / NORWALK," CT origin, circa 1835, ovoid jar with flared collar and lug handles, decorated with a brushed plant flanking the maker's mark and on reverse with an unusual X-shaped device. Cobalt highlights to mark and handle terminals. A 1 1/8" chip (and some glazed-over chipping) to rim interior. Rim exterior with small chips and small U-shaped surface line. Faint 1" hairline from rim on reverse. 3" Y-shaped surface line and associated in-the-firing contact mark to reverse, not visible on interior. Two small in-the-firing chips to left handle and a minor in-the-firing contact mark to right handle. H 10".
