Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt House Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed scene of a house with door, six windows, and dormer atop a hill with two pine trees and two split-rail fences. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Heavy wear to rim. A 1 5/8" loss to one handle. A tiny chip to opposite handle. Minor exfoliation to shoulder on front. A large Y-shaped crack on underside, extending 3 3/4" up base of crock on right side. A 2 1/2" line from rim on front. A 2 3/4" line from rim on far right side of crock's reverse. Some staining to surface. H 9 1/4".
