Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Inscribed "1893," attributed to Athens Pottery, Athens, NY, 1893, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky brushed design of a rooster standing atop a stylized ground, below the cobalt date, "1893." A floral-decorated stoneware umbrella stand, stamped "ATHENS / POTTERY. / N.Y." and bearing the date, "1893," in the same hand was sold as lot 3 in Crocker Farm's July 16, 2011 auction. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example. Excellent condition with a small rim chip on reverse.
